Biography: Cantabile’s origins are rarely mentioned, but her mastery of the Sigmund-style swordsmanship identifies her as a survivor of Hod. Most, however, know of her as the Sixth Division Commander in the Order of Lorelei.
Despite being his subordinate, Cantabile disliked Van. She never explained her feelings, but her connection to Hod may have played a role. The most logical cause, however, seems to be her lack of faith in the Commandant. Those who knew her have determined the following conclusions: She witnessed the cause of Hod’s fall, Van approached her and asked for her cooperation, or she simply overheard plans with which she disagreed. Regardless of the reason, she knew better than to trust Van, but she also knew better than to blatantly betray her superior, forcing her to only pass on hints to others. Her best chance came when his sister, Tear Grants joined the academy to become an Oracle Knight.
Cantabile, however, was disappointed. The girl possessed the skills to defeat her sparring partner, Larry Hughes, but did not take the battle very seriously as she dropped her guard to defeat her opponent. While such tactics worked in sparring, especially with novices, it would not work in a real battle with trained fighters. This experience provided the first bit of evidence that her convenient student lacked the will of a true soldier, causing her to declare victory to Larry. Her decision worsened her chances of countering Van, for it turned Tear against her. As Tear stayed in the Daathic Academy, she and Cantabile continued their rough encounters until Cantabile finally resorted to brutal honesty, asking the girl to forget about her brother if she wanted to become an Oracle Knight. She finally gave Tear a map and directed her toward Van so she could see for herself that her brother had become far out of human reach.
Cantabile did not see Tear for a while, only catching wind that the girl had snuck off to Yulia City. One day, however, Tear returned, despite her clear abhorrence of Cantabile, and requested to be sent to a unit directly under Moh’s control in order to accomplish her goal. Seeing a drive to match her skills, Cantabile agreed, satisfied that she had finally found someone not only free from Van’s influence but also driven to stop him. Unfortunately, Cantabile knew that she would not be able to help her pupil much more, as Mohs had sent a request to transfer her to a remote village out of paranoia of her voiced loyalty to the Fon Master faction. Shortly thereafter, she was sent away, and for the next few years, could only gather scant details of the situation, convincing her to seek out Tear once she had the chance. Little did she know exactly how she would find the younger Grants.

Personality: Cantabile is a strong-willed woman who balances vigor with maturity and highly respects strength. She may sometimes make enemies with her no-nonsense attitude. However, she drops any hostility to strong and honorable individuals whose efforts back their words. For example, she used to criticize Tear’s motivations and drive for joining the Oracle Knights and yet happily transfers her when Tear requests to join Mohs, and, in Cantabile’s mind, shows the proper resolve to become a good soldier. She may not be the most compassionate person, but she is quite capable of praising or striking up a friendly conversation when she sees fit to do so, even if her amiability is masked by a rough exterior. In general, while informal—even a bit rude at times—she puts out an approachable or vivacious attitude unless given reason to do otherwise.
However, Cantabile has very little tolerance for the weak-willed. She shows no mercy as she questions the resolve of anyone who makes a half-hearted effort. She takes full advantage of her honesty to critique others on both a physical and psychological level, which, while typically accurate, seldom helps, as her methods are somewhat off-putting. She may have the insight to notice a harmful foible or disagree with someone, but she does a poor job at explaining her reasons for her objection. As a result, many of her critiques transform into attacks that only worsen relations and poor behaviour.
Despite her typical informalities with those she outranks, she knows how to be respectful when need be. For example, while she may not like Van, she knows better than to single-handedly defy him. While she holds her morals closely, she will forfeit them in favor of professionalism if the two conflict. However, she will still try to accommodate both as much as possible.
